By 11 o’clock that evening, Teresa de la Cruz was ready to call it a day. With Jenny Marshall, and several other agents, she had been plowing her way laboriously through the financial history of the Prasad family. All leave had been cancelled, a fresh batch of agents had been called in to take over for the night and, in any case, Teresa was beginning to feel that she was too tired to recognize an important piece of information, even if she found it among the hundreds of pages spread all over the table in the main conference room. She would have to be back by 6 o’clock the following morning for a conference call with the Director. It was time to go home for a few hours of sleep. The night shift would have to press on and hopefully have better luck than she had. Gathering up her disposable coffee cup and plate, she deposited them, together with the remains of her pepperoni pizza, in the trash can. She stood and called across the table to Jenny Marshall, who nodded and raised a hand to say that she too was on the point of going home.

But as she turned to face the door of the conference room, case in hand, a duty agent put her head inside the door.

‘Agent de la Cruz, I have two people who want to see you about the Dani Ryan inquiry. A man and a woman, Asian, look like they could be father and daughter. They say it’s urgent. I have put them in an interview room on two.’

Teresa felt her pulse quicken. She turned.

‘Jen?’

‘I’m right with you,’ Jenny replied.

Fully energized again, they raced for the elevators.
